The Goals of the Athabasca Watershed Council include:
- Ensure the Athabasca Watershed Council is an effective, efficient and sustainable Watershed Planning and Advisory Council.
- Improve watershed knowledge and understanding within the Athabasca Watershed Council.
- Champion increased awareness by providing information and education to all.
- Encourage and work towards protection, conservation and enhancement of the ecological integrity of the watershed.
- Facilitate development and implementation of integrated planning for the watershed.
- Promote best practices to help achieve healthy aquatic ecosystems, safe and secure drinking water supplies and reliable water supplies for a sustainable economy.
To achieve these goals, the work of the Athabasca Watershed Council focuses on these key initiatives:
- To foster sound and informative relationships/partnerships with communities, sectors and people who live, work, recreate or otherwise have an interest in the Athabasca Watershed in order to exchange knowledge and information and work together for the ecological health and sustainability of the Athabasca Watershed.
- Complete the Athabasca State of the Watershed Report – a living (continually revised and upgraded) document that will include aboriginal Traditional Ecological Knowledge and the best available western science to assess the current state of ecological health of the Athabasca Watershed.
- Work with the greater Athabasca Watershed community to complete an Athabasca Integrated Watershed Management Plan (include a brief descriptor from NSWA on what the IWMP entails).
- Work in partnership with the greater Athabasca Watershed community to address the recommendations and goals of the Athabasca Integrated Watershed Management Plan.
The Athabasca State of the Watershed Report – Phase 1
The Athabasca Watershed Council is currently working towards an Athabasca State of the Watershed Report. This report is a work in progress, and will provide an assessment of the health of the Athabasca Watershed using the best scientific data and knowledge currently available.
The Athabasca State of the Watershed Report – Phase 1 was completed March 2011 as a preliminary review of literature and knowledge about the Athabasca watershed.
