Caring For Our Watersheds Program
The Athabasca Watershed Council will be participating in the Caring For Our Watersheds Program with interested schools and youth groups within the Athabasca Watershed. The Caring For Your Watershed Program asks students to answer the question: “What can I do to help improve my watershed?”
Caring For Our Watersheds is an educational program that works with the strengths of participating industry, environmental organizations and communities to engage students in preserving and improving their local watersheds. The program empowers students to imagine, develop and create solutions in their local watersheds.
For interested schools and groups, the Athabasca Watershed Council will provide an orientation to the program and the Caring for Our Watersheds Contest. The contest requires students to work individually or in groups to submit a 1000 word proposal answer the question “What can I do to help improve my watershed?” Prizes of up to $1000 are awarded for winning entries, with other prizes simply for entering the contest.
The Athabasca Watershed Council invites all Athabasca Watershed schools to participate and enter the Caring for Our Watersheds Program. Check it out at http://caringforourwatersheds.com/index.jsp or email the for more information.
Science Outreach – Athabasca
Science Outreach – Athabasca is comprised of members of the general public (teachers, scientists and others) who are interested in science and think it is important. They have two main objectives:
- To promote science awareness in the greater Athabasca area and beyond.
- To document the scientific research done on the Athabasca River Basin.
Science Outreach fosters awareness and interest in science by promoting ‘hands on’ participation and by obtaining scientific information for the general public. Activities include science talks, camps, traveling exhibits, bird and butterfly counts and other events. Topics include archeology, astronomy, chemistry, geology physical geography, meteorology and physics.
